I don’t usually even read the replies I get when I send an opinion to Senator John Cornyn. I skim through them, and they’ve all seemed to be puff pieces that don’t say much and don’t offer much specific enough even to argue with. Today I got something very different:
Dear [david78209]
Thank you for contacting me regarding the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) investigations surrounding the 2016 presidential election. I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this matter.
On June 14, 2018, the DOJ Inspector General released a report on the 2016 Clinton email investigation. The Inspector General’s report is a shocking indictment of the failed leadership of former FBI Director Jim Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch while serving as the heads of two noble institutions of law enforcement. These findings question the integrity of the Clinton email investigation and the investigation into Russia interference in the 2016 presidential election while tarnishing the DOJ’s reputation as an unbiased and independent investigator.
Americans deserve a DOJ that is impartial, honest, and free from political bias or interference. The DOJ, under Attorney General Lynch and FBI Director Comey, put partisan preferences above the law, undermining public confidence and the rule of law. It is time to end the politicization of the DOJ and FBI. These institutions should be beacons of integrity and impartiality, and the officials at these agencies should uphold the highest standards of integrity in order to restore the American public’s faith in our law enforcement.
We must continue to increase government transparency and expand Americans’ access to information in order to strengthen our democracy. Allegations of misconduct on the part of government officials should be investigated and swift legal action should be taken where appropriate. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I will continue working to ensure both the DOJ and FBI remain accountable and transparent to the American people.
I appreciate the opportunity to represent Texas in the United States Senate. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.
Sincerely,
JOHN CORNYN
United States Senator

I replied:
What you say about the FBI and DOJ goes TRIPLE for the Supreme Court. The last thing we need is a “Justice” there who makes paranoid, partisan accusations at his hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Weren’t you there?
It’s the first time I’ve ever replied to one of these “Thank you for taking the time to contact me” emails. I wonder if anyone in Cornyn’s office will even read my reply.
Perhaps the most striking thing is that a senator (or someone on his staff) could preach about how some government institutions should be “free from political bias or interference”… and should not “put partisan preferences above the law, undermining public confidence and the rule of law” while at the same time supporting Brett Kavanaugh. Your mind has to be so compartmentalized that the walls between the compartments must be soundproof, fireproof, and able to hold up to nuclear weapons.
